The Ocean Alliance, led by CMA-CGM and made up of China Cosco Shipping, Evergreen Line, and Orient Overseas Container Line, will offer 40 services on the east-west trades with 498 port calls.
It will be the largest alliance in shipping history when it launches in April 2017, battling with THE Alliance and the 2M Alliance.
In PTI’s current poll: ‘Which shipping alliance will have the largest TEU by the end of 2017?’, we’ve found that 48.4% believe the 2M Alliance will be crowned the strongest by the end of the year with THE Alliance as the next popular choice at 27.4%*.
So, despite it’s size, it would seem that it’s an industry belief that the Ocean Alliance (20.2% of votes) will not topple the two biggest players.
THE Alliance consists of NYK Line, MOL, “K” Line, Hapag-Lloyd, and Yang Ming Line. The capacity of United Arab Shipping Company is also included in THE Alliance because of its merger with Hapag-Lloyd.
The strength of the 2M Alliance is illustrated well in the first infographic below by Lloyd’s List.
